Do Not Buy a Used Camera from a Professional Photographer

Many people assume that if they want a professional-grade camera, their best option is to buy a camera from a professional. This false. Why? Because professionals use their cameras a lot more – and a lot more toughly – than most individuals. It could be just a few years old but have taken 100,000 or more photos, compared to a camera from a non-professional that’s maybe had its shutter clicked 1,000 times.

Check the Shutter Count

Even if the camera looks great on the surface, you cannot know for sure how much it has been used until you check the shutter count. It will tell yow many actuations the shutter has gone through, which will give you an idea of how many are left before it needs to be replaced.

Do Not Buy This Year’s Model

There is no point in buying a used model if you’re going to buy the current model. In most cases, you’re not going to save much at all, and a camera that is just one model year behind is going to be nearly as good as the new one. Save yourself a few hundred dollars by going down a year or two in models.

Inspect the Sensor

Most people buying a used camera will look at the body, viewfinder, and LCD screen, but they then forget to inspect the sensor. No matter how great the camera looks on the outside, if the insides don’t work, then you will not have made a good investment. A sensor that has scratches or other imperfections is a sensor you want to avoid.

Test the Camera

Never buy a camera that you have not been able to hold in your hands and inspect. When you visit South Bay Jewelry & Loan, you can look at the camera and try it out for yourself. We want you to be 100% satisfied with your purchase, and that is really only possible if you have had a chance to investigate the purchase to make sure it is the best choice.
